Paying for public transport You can buy a train, metro, tram or bus ticket at your local train station. At the train station, you may either visit the ticket office, in Italian named a "biglietteria," or the ticket machines, also labeled as "biglietteria."

A contactless payment system is being brought into effect on all buses and trams throughout Florence and Tuscany on March 28, 2024. All travellers, including the millions of tourists who visit the region and are unfamiliar with the local system, will be able to hop on board and pay for passage with a single tap.

City transport In case of a ticket control, passengers must be able to show a validated ticket (both on board and at the stop). One-way tickets cost €1,20 and may be purchased at ATAF client points, authorized dealers (newspaper stands, tabacchi, cafés), equipped ticket machines and on board (for € 2).

Look for the contactless symbol on your credit or debit card to see if your card is contactless enabled. Then, board a bus with the contactless symbol and instead of paying with cash, simply tap your card or contactless-enabled device onto the reader and wait for the beep.
